In the nineteenth century mazes became a popular form of entertainment in public places and parks. Since 1970’s intricate mazes have become a popular form of recreation for everyone. They entertain and captivate people of all ages. They give you the opportunity to experience cornstalks rustling in the autumn breezes and the pleasure Mother Nature gives us every day to just be outdoors.
Mazes are puzzles designed to provide numerous choices to its participants: turn left, turn right or go straight and do it without frustration because it is FUN. It requires some analytical thinking. Once you begin you become a part of the puzzle and your goal is to find the middle and then remember how to get out.
Our first maze was the theme of a llama and sunflowers. We featured them because of the joy they have brought to so many. This year, we go behind the scene and feature all the animals we raise on the farm: beef cattle, draft horses, llamas, pigs and chickens. They each hold a special place within the farm's operation and we love and enjoy them all. They are what make us happy to be called "farmers".
Please come and enjoy the fun of a farm activity. Eat some ice cream and take home a pumpkin, some cornstalks or straw. Leave with your own piece of the farm and some great memories.
Mazes date back at least 4,000 years to the time of Greek myths. In Roman times labyrinths and mazes were found in artwork in floors, public buildings and in the pavement in streets.
It is believed that they were used for rituals and processions. In the centuries that followed they appeared in stone labyrinths and lined the shores of the Baltic Sea.
Formal gardens appeared later in Europe in castles and palaces to amuse royalty. The task was to find the center and then return to where you started.
